Iceberg Canyon at mile 79 is a major side canyon just upstream from the Rincon. Gary Ladd reports that before Lake Powell, Iceberg Canyon hikers gained entry by swimming a cold pool, and the name grew out of rumors spread by the shivering explorers. Six forks radiate from the canyon, three short and the last three slightly longer. Walker Dam in one of the end forks is a natural earth dam perhaps related to Anasazi inhabitants.
IcebergΓÇÖs first major side canyon to the right is home to a pleasant alcove at its end. A wide rock spall dating from 1974 is visible on the east side of Lake Powell just north of IcebergΓÇÖs entrance. IΓÇÖve camped in Iceberg more times than any other canyon and am always amazed at how minor changes in the level of the lake can affect the topography. The longer forks upstream offer the most hope of sandy beaches.
